THE DOCTRINE OF HELL
(Click here to see overview of this section.)
I do not feel right about starting off this subject without first explaining a little about the nature of God. The Bible tells us that God is love 1Jn.4:8. In fact he loves us so much he made the ultimate sacrifice for us by spilling his own blood on our behalf. Jn.3:16, Acts 20:28. God is also a God of Justice and his very nature demands judgment upon all sin.Rom.6:23. We are also told that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin Heb.9:22. That's how serious sin is! So the Lord himself paid for our sins, all we have to do is accept him and his payment as a free gift.Jn.3:16, Eph.2:8-9. He will indeed judge the world. It is also true that people will condemn themselves to hell by rejecting Christ as Savior and ignoring God's plan of salvation. It is important to recognize that to demand justice is part of God's nature, however he does not take pleasure in it.
Ezek 33:11 "Say to them, 'As I live!' declares the Lord GOD, 'I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel? This is one of my favorite verses that shows the heart of God. Twice he pleads with them turn back, turn back from your evil ways. The Lord ask them, why would they choose to die? You see by his nature he has to judge sin. Yet as we can see he would rather forgive, but he can't unless they repent, because he is a God of justice.
Deut 10:17-18 "For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality, nor take a bribe. "He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing.
Ps 9:7-8 But the LORD abides forever; He has established His throne for judgment, And He will judge the world in righteousness; He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity. (As we can see he is a fair judge.) We are all sinners and those who do not accept his payment for their sins will receive his wrath. As we will see Hell is a very real and unpleasant place. Hell was made for the devil and his angels Mt.25:41. We can avoid it by turning to Jesus. There are 3 Greek words referring to the abode of the unrighteous in the New Testament. These 3 Greek words are translated in English as Hell in the King James Version of the Bible. The word Hell is also defined as 3 different places as will be shown in numbers 1-3
